ZOO: Gorgeous & JUNGLE

ZOO is a group I've been searching for ever since I discovered them last year. Forming in 1989 as a dance/musical group, they hit the charts in 1991 with the song "Choo Choo TRAIN" and went on to have a moderately successful career until their break up in late '95. You can still hear some of the members work in the very successful group "EXILE" who just released another album this year. Thanks to a cover version of "Gorgeous" from Sandy Lam, I became interested in finding out more about this dance/pop group. Much to my dismay, I was not able to find much on the internet about them or from them. Rest assured though I was determined and made sure to search for some of their tunes upon my return to Japan. Luckily enough I was able to find the one album I was looking for and one other and I've found both to great listens. While I know the "Choo Choo TRAIN" was their break out single, I prefer "Gorgeous" and the track alone makes the album worth a listen. Don't worry, the whole album great and many of the tracks of JUNGLE are fantastic as well. Check it out and watch out for more soon! Enjoy!

Great Version of a Chaka Khan classic

Yoo Young-Jin (유영진): Blues In Rhythm & Blue Rhythm

Yoo Young-Jin has arguably been the most dominant presence in K-pop over the last decade and a half but ironically, most are completely unaware of that fact. This singer/songwriter/composer, is responsible for some of K-pops biggest hits over the last few years but many do not know his name nor can recall his string of solo efforts under his current employer, the juggernaut that is SM Entertainment. Originally beginning as a performer for SM, Yoo Young-Jin shifted his interests to composing and arranging after he fulfilled his mandatory military service. While his signature style is still felt and his powerhouse vocals can be heard in accompaniment, Young-Jin has taken a backseat to the public eye and instead help solidified the careers and success of some of K-Pop's most well known groups. H.O.T, DBSK(TVXQ), Super Junior, and now the freshly debuted EXO, all owe their continued success to this man behind the scenes and while his at times "off-beat" artistic pursuits have been questioned, no one can deny his impact. While I enjoy the whole array of his works, I wish that he was still a performer. His vocals and arrangements and soulful, powerful and damn catchy. These are his first two solo albums and they make for great listens. Check out the covers of Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" and "Easy" on his 2nd album, they are great renditions. Enjoy!

J-Urban/Hip-Hop

Like many suburban White kids in the U.S., I have been fascinated by Hip-Hop and R&B from an early age. Growing up in the 90's, I was lucky enough to experience the genres at their peaks and enjoy a diverse and inspiring age before it became over-commercialized, mediocre and insulting. While trying to find solace within underground artists, I eventually became annoyed with the ideology that "good" music should not be meant for the ears of many. Through the recommendation of a classmate in college, I checked out a Korean Hip-Hop trio, Epik High, and my life was completely changed. I became obsessed and from that point, I have happily scoured the internet for Asian Hip-Hop and R&B. While Korea does hold most of my favorite artists, it's Japan that practically pioneered its introduction into Asia and allowed many of favorite artists to exist today. Unlike the states, many artists (not all) have stayed true to the origins of the genres and made their way into the mainstream. This post features five artists from over the last 20 years that I feel represent the growth and roots of the genres. DJ Krush, an ex-yakuza, who became inspired by hip-hop and put the J-urban scene on the map in the early 90's. Coma-Chi, one of the few female rappers/singers to establish herself in Japan. Shingo Suzuki and 45, labelmates who utilize genre blending and musicians from all over the world to highlight the beauty of universal hip-hop. Last and not least, JASMINE, a fantastic R&B singer bringing a mature, soulful flare to modern J-pop countering the stereotypical "cutesy image". There is a whole range of artist, past and present, who have brought their finesse to the genres but I hope everyone takes a listen to these artists and check out their other works. Scoobie Do: Beautiful Days

Merry Turkey Day! Hope everyone has been well. My day has been odd this year but ultimately I did have something to be thankful for! I thought I would post something today that a lot of visitors will enjoy. Scoobie Do is a Japanese Funk/Soul Rock group and no they aren't meddling kids that travel around in the Mystery Machine solving "ghostly" mysteries. Sorry I had to make the joke. Anyway, I discovered this group a few years ago through myspace (when it was useful) and songs from "Beautiful Days" is what I happened to hear. The group has a great vibe and definitely try it out if you are into upbeat "funky" rock. Enjoy!
